The instant you lay eyes on the 2025 GMC Hummer, you immediately know what it is. While Broncos can bear a resemblance, there really isn’t anything quite like it. I recently sampled the EV variant, and it made me wonder how far engineers can extend electric capability off-road. The verdict, like so many modern technologies, is that the limits feel limitless.
First things first: Is the new Hummer EV 3X SUV costly? Absolutely. Is it memorable? Even more so. The revival of the Hummer as a fully electric vehicle is nothing if not audacious. Once an emblem of excess and thirst for fuel, the Hummer now returns in the EV era as the striking GMC Hummer EV 3X SUV. With a three-motor powertrain, a hardy off-road kit, and forward-looking styling, this SUV is as much a statement as it is a performer. As with most vehicles that push the envelope, the Hummer EV 3X comes with trade-offs.
Performance
The 2025 Hummer EV 3X SUV is fitted with a three-motor arrangement that produces an impressive amount of output. Acceleration is lively for a vehicle of this mass, and the instant torque characteristic of electric vehicles makes it feel unexpectedly swift despite its 9,000-pound curb weight. Off the line, the Hummer delivered a surge that brought a grin to my face, whether it was day one of testing or day seven. Merging onto highways or climbing steep grades, it never felt lacking in power.
For those committed to off-roading, my test unit included the $9,995 Extreme Off-Road Package. That upgrade adds 18-inch black aluminum wheels, rocker panel guards with steps, a full-length skid plate, front and rear underbody cameras, and mud-terrain tires. The package not only boosts protection on rough tracks but also offers reassurance for anyone intending to push this EV beyond paved surfaces.
Off-roader
The Hummer EV 3X’s off-road capability is among its most notable attributes. The mix of three-motor power, adaptive suspension, and dedicated drive modes makes it a legitimate contender among the most capable SUVs available. Functions like “CrabWalk” — which lets the Hummer move diagonally at low speeds — aren’t mere novelties; they actually assist in tight trail scenarios. The underbody cameras included with the off-road package give drivers extra assurance by letting them “see” obstacles that would otherwise remain out of view.
For me, however, the vehicle’s massive footprint can be a drawback. Narrow tracks and tight switchbacks are difficult to maneuver, and even with sophisticated tech, the Hummer’s huge proportions sometimes felt cumbersome. Still, on wide-open landscapes, rocky routes, or deep mud, it seems unstoppable.
Efficiency/range
Efficiency is always a topic with electric vehicles, and on paper the Hummer EV posts decent figures: 53 MPGe in the city, 43 MPGe on the highway, and 48 MPGe combined. Nevertheless, real-world range anxiety persists. On shorter runs, the Hummer performs well, but organizing a long-distance trip remains cumbersome. I’ve driven EVs since they first appeared. Public charging has gotten better, but charging duration, particularly with standard equipment, is nowhere near as convenient as a quick fill-up in a gasoline SUV.
The Hummer’s large battery pack helps ease range worries to an extent, but when you factor in spirited driving, off-road use, or cold conditions, usable range will fall. For a vehicle that starts north of $104,000, having to meticulously plan charging stops can feel like a step back in convenience. See also: Top Fastest Charging Electric Vehicles in 2025 Revealed
Safety
Safety is another area where the Hummer EV 3X performs well. GMC has fitted the SUV with a range of advanced driver-assistance systems, including lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. The elevated seating position, combined with a sturdy build and abundant camera views, should instill confidence in drivers.
Styling
As I mentioned earlier, the exterior design of the Hummer EV 3X SUV is unmistakable. GMC embraced the Hummer’s legacy with a bold, boxy silhouette that demands notice. From its upright grille to its muscular posture, it turned heads wherever I drove it. My test car wore a beautiful Interstellar White finish, which lent a hint of refinement despite the imposing size.
Inside, the Hummer’s cabin delivered big, blending ruggedness with modern technology. Large digital displays dominate the dash, while quality materials give the interior a premium aura. My favorite touch was the removable Infinity Roof panels ($1,495), which create an open-air vibe that amplifies its adventurous persona. Yet the interior isn’t flawless. Some controls feel needlessly complex, and the sheer volume of features can overwhelm drivers seeking simplicity. For the week I had it, it felt a touch excessive.
Pricing
The base MSRP of the 2025 Hummer EV 3X SUV is $104,650. However, the test vehicle, with options and destination fees, climbed to more than $118,000. That price firmly places it in luxury SUV territory, pitting it against upscale Land Rovers, Rivian’s R1S, and even certain Porsche Cayenne variants. Whether you find it appealing or over the top comes down to personal preference, but a Hummer certainly won’t be mistaken for anything else.
