Porsche Introduces Wireless EV Charging for Cayenne Electric

Porsche is poised to become the first automaker to offer wireless electric vehicle charging commercially with its forthcoming Cayenne model. The 11 kW system featuring a single-box base plate will let vehicles simply drive over a parking spot equipped with a purpose-mounted floor plate, whereupon the car will begin charging automatically without any cables being attached.

Drivers only have to align the vehicle over the base plate to initiate charging. At an output of 11 kW, the wireless charger could fully replenish a typical EV in roughly five hours. However, not every vehicle will be compatible, since the setup requires dedicated hardware inside the car — an option that will be available for the upcoming Cayenne Electric.

The German marque states the system will halt charging automatically if it detects an object between the vehicle and the base plate. Porsche adds the plate can be fitted in multiple locations, including garages, carports or standard parking bays, which may make it a more practical choice for drivers without a private driveway.

“Simplicity, everyday practicality and charging infrastructure remain the key factors in the acceptance of electric mobility. We are proud inductive charging will soon be available in Porsche’s series production. Charging an electric car at home has never been this easy or convenient,” said Michael Steiner, Porsche Board Member for Development.

Porsche will demonstrate the technology at the forthcoming Munich Motor Show ahead of the Cayenne Electric’s debut later this year. The wireless floor plate system is due to go on sale in 2026.
